As someone who has been intensely fascinated by the culture of 52 Blocks for many years, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to sort out facts from fiction regarding its inception and evolution… and like many others, I’ve found myself frustrated trying to make heads or tails of it all.
Shadow has finally done something that 52 has desperately needed — he’s written a clear, concise and thoroughly researched history of 52 Blocks. A work complete with names, locations and time frames, that lays out not only exactly how the system was developed, but why it was developed.
Highly recommended!

when youre in prison learning how to fight is mandatory if you dont want to get robbed everyday, ignore any combat instructor telling you theres no such thing as knife duels, he never had to fight for his sneakers or the phone or his commissary or because some one turned the tv channel. the average guy in jail gets into more fights than your average instructor spars. … you cant be my instructor if i stabbed more people than you…. this is why combat systems like 52 blocks have an upper hand over most systems. most of the instructors or people who use it run the houses in jail and fight any place anytime fist knife or razor fight in close quarters. and have a record of stabbings and fights documented in misbehavior reports. thats the only way to build a rep in prison violence. and its how you win fights in prison. having said that i can say yeah the guy knows what hes talking about , the guy in the dojo who never stabbed anyone and the breakdance choreography fighters dont.

A great read; Shadow has delved into the origins of 52 – and his own combative evolution – while clearly and concisely delving into some of the cultural paradigms and constraints that helped shape 52 blocks (and it’s relatives that evolved in the carceral system).

It is good to have a reminder -and an eye opener (like yourself)- out here to make sure that the dirt doesn’t get swept all the way under the rug (as far as 52 is concerned).
I really like the inclusion of The 5% and their place in the history and evolution of the art.
Too many people, who have a little (knowledge) but position themselves at the top (as the ultimate authorities) end up limiting and crippling the very art they are pushing.
Someone has to push from the other side.
Peace. Good work.

I am Dennis Newsome and found this to be extremely informative on the History and Development of “52”!!! Ken “Shadow” Goodman just gave a workshop in my San Diego, CA community at the “World Beat Cultural Center “and it was Beautifully Structured! There was a logical progression in the instruction versus being all over the place. I was impressed as well as everyone there!!! He was taught well and he taught well.
